Tuxford, Nottinghamshire: A House and Two Churches.
A visit to a house built c1810 for the Duke of Newcastle's chaplain, which fronts onto the Great North Road. A brick and pantile building, the accommodation is over four floors (inclusive of vaulted basement) and originally included servant's rooms and a fitted bath. A former carriage house is adjacent. The current works are intended to return the property to largely as built condition using appropriate traditional materials.
We will visit St Nicholas Church in Tuxford. Rev. J. Standish in 1907 wrote that 'the herringbone stonework at the west end of the south aisle in the arcade wall close to the tower is from Saxon times, the chancel arcade is of the Decorated period, the pillars and capitals are very Early English and on the south side of the chancel arch, there are indications in the south wall of the spring of an arch which may have been Norman.'
A visit will also be made to the 11th century All Saints church in West Markham .
Cost: £5
